Which enzymes break down peptidoglycan?

Posted September 14, 2021

Answer

The enzymes that break down peptidoglycan are known as autolysins. Autolysins are endogenous bacteriolytic enzymes. Autolysins break down and digest the peptidoglycan component of the cell wall in the bacteria that produce them, resulting in the death of the cell. Autolysins exist in all bacteria that contain peptidoglycan in their cell walls.
