What do the peaks in mass spectrometry represent?

Mass Spectrometry (MS) is an analytical technique that’s used to determine the type and amount of chemicals present in a sample. The mass spectrum that’s generated is presented as a vertical bar graph. Each graph represents an ion having a specific mass-to-charge ratio (m/z). The length of the bar denotes the relative abundance of the ion. The base peak represents the greatest relative abundance or 100%. Other peaks correspond to ion fragments.
