Is there alternative techniques to Southern blotting?

Posted May 2, 2024

Answer

Alternative techniques to Southern blotting include microarrays, NGS, and real-time quantitative PCR (qPCR). qPCR is based on the amplification of specific DNA sequences using PCR. It measures the accumulation of amplified DNA in real-time, allowing for the quantification of the initial amount of target DNA. qPCR provides results quickly, often within a few hours. DNA microarray is a high-throughput technique used to analyze the expression levels of thousands of genes simultaneously.  They require, however, prior knowledge of the sequences to be analyzed. NGS generates millions of DNA sequences in parallel. It is highly sensitive and capable of detecting various genetic alterations, including mutations, deletions and insertions.
