EthD-1 [Ethidium Homodimer-1]

Ethidium Homodimer-1 (EthD-1) is a high-affinity fluorescent nucleic acid dye that binds ssDNA, dsDNA, RNA, oligonucleotides and triple helix DNA. Upon binding DNAs, its fluorescence is significantly enhanced (>30 times), and bright red fluorescence is emitted. Since EthD-1 carries a strong positive charge and cannot penetrate intact/living cell membranes, it is often used to detect dead cells. EthD-1 is generally used in combination with Calcein AM to stain dead and live cells respectively to determine cell viability and toxicity. EthD-1 is a dead cell-specific dye in all cell types (including mammals, bacteria and yeast). It might also be used for monitoring live/dead cell tests in combination with our other cell viability stains such as the superior Calcein Ultra Blue, Calcein Ultra Green, Cytocalcein, Cytotrace dyes and CytoTell dyes. AAT Bioquest offers the largest collection of fluorescent stains for monitoring cell viabilities.
