About
EthD-1
Ethidium Homodimer-1
Ethidium Homodimer-1 (EthD-1) is a high-affinity fluorescent nucleic acid dye that binds ssDNA, dsDNA, RNA, oligonucleotides and triple helix DNA. Upon binding DNAs, its fluorescence is significantly enhanced (>30 times), and bright red fluorescence is emitted. Since EthD-1 carries a strong positive charge and cannot penetrate intact/living cell membranes, it is often used to detect dead cells. EthD-1 is generally used in combination with Calcein AM to stain dead and live cells respectively to determine cell viability and toxicity. EthD-1 is a dead cell-specific dye in all cell types (including mammals, bacteria and yeast). It might also be used for monitoring live/dead cell tests in combination with our other cell viability stains such as the superior Calcein Ultra Blue, Calcein Ultra Green, Cytocalcein, Cytotrace dyes and CytoTell® dyes. AAT Bioquest offers the largest collection of fluorescent stains for monitoring cell viabilities.
