Does DNA methylation promote transcription?

Posted January 22, 2021

Answer

DNA methylation acts to repress transcription. The covalent conversion of cytosine to 5-methylcytosine (5-mC) by the addition of a methyl group to the 5-carbon of cytosine inhibits transcription factors from binding to the gene and initiating transcription.
