What is cellular metabolism?

Cellular metabolism is the set of biochemical reactions that occur within a cell which are needed to support the building up and breaking down of cellular components, ultimately allowing cells to grow, maintain structures, and respond to the environment. The series of biochemical reactions are also known as metabolic pathways, where molecules are converted into intermediates used for the next reaction in a sequence, eventually leading to a final product.
