How does stem cell therapy work?

Posted March 13, 2024

Answer

For stem cell therapy, stem cells that are grown in a lab are manipulated to specialize into specific cell types such as blood cells, nerve cells, or heart muscle cells. The newly generated specialized cells are implanted into a patient to repair an injured organ. For example, when newly generated blood cells are injected into the body of a person suffering from some form of blood disease, the healthy blood cells contribute to repairing the damaged blood cells.

Stem cell therapy is a safe treatment with minimal risk of rejection as the new tissue is derived from the patient’s own body.
