What are the advantages of chick chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) angiogenesis assay?

Posted October 10, 2023

Answer

The advantages of CAM include:

  1. Simplicity
  2. Rapid
  3. Cost-efficient model

CAM develops in a short time into a structure which covers the entire inner surface of the shell, displaying the vascular network. This process occurs over a period of only 7 days. CAM allows for complete accessibility to the circulatory system for delivery of molecules intravascularly. It also permits screening a large quantity of pharmacological samples and allows for high reproducibility. It is used to study pathological processes by exposure to drugs, cytokines, or isolated cells. CAM is also suitable for modifications, for microscopy, and provides small tumors which can be used for IHC analysis. Therefore, expression of differing markers can be visualized in the tissue. Additionally, this assay is performed in an in vivo environment and allows for real-time visualization. It also allows for multiple tests per individual CAM. Lastly, there is no requirement for animals to be narcotized or restrained when using these assays.
