What are the advantages of using immobilized enzymes over using free enzymes?

Posted February 22, 2024

Answer

Using immobilized enzymes over free enzymes offers several advantages including:

  • Higher stability because enzyme molecules are protected by immobilizing matrix
  • Immediate availability of enzymes for reusing multiple times, which allows for continuous processes
  • Reactions are more controllable as enzymes can be removed during any stage of the reaction
  • Lower purification and downstream processes as enzymes are absent in products
  • Lower chances of product being contaminated with enzyme as the enzyme can be taken out from the product mixture
  • Lower cost of production and separation from being able to reuse enzymes repetitively
