Features of action potentials: 

• Are produced in an all-or-nothing manner
• Have a short duration of approximately 1 msec
• Frequency of action potentials impact the way nerve cells code the intensity of information
• Nerve cells encode the intensity of information through the frequency of action potentials, with the frequency or number of action potentials increasing with increased stimulus
