• Maintain mineral homeostasis by regulating bone fluids and the fluxes of ions between bone fluid and interstitial fluid compartments
• Play a complementary role in maintaining bone matrix
• Are an integral component of the marrow stromal system and play a vital role in hematopoiesis by regulating the inductive microenvironment
• May play a role in propagating the activation signal that stimulates bone remodeling and bone resorption
