What are the types of T helper cells?

Posted November 29, 2023

Answer

There are three types of T helper cells – Th1, Th2, and Th17. Each plays a different role in driving the immune response in a specific direction.

  • Th1 helper cells: Th1 helper cells are responsible for directing the innate immune response that involves a generalized attack to any substance it considers abnormal.
  • Th2 helper cells: Th2 helper cells are responsible for directing the adaptive immune response that involves a targeted immune defense against a specific pathogen.
  • Th17 helper cells: Th17 helper cells are responsible for releasing IL-17 (interleukin 17), an inflammatory chemical that neutralizes certain fungi and viruses.
