What are the uses of magnetic resonance spectroscopy?

Posted August 30, 2022

Answer

There are various uses of magnetic resonance spectroscopy. For clinical purposes, MRS can be used at high magnetic field strengths  (between 11-14T) on body fluids, tissue samples, and isolated cells, as well as full-body magnetic resonance imaging. It can also be used to compare the chemical makeup of normal, healthy brain tissue with abnormal stroke or epilepsy tissue. Additionally, it helps to detect metabolic changes in brain tumors and assist in detecting brain diseases like Alzheimer’s, depression, and ALS. Lastly, MRS can be used to study the metabolism of muscles, as it can measure the intramyocellular lipids content of them.
