Facultative anaerobes have high concentrations of two enzymes - catalase and superoxide dismutase (SOD).

Catalase is involved in converting hydrogen peroxide to oxygen and water. Superoxide dismutase is responsible for breaking down harmful superoxide anions into ground-state oxygen and hydrogen peroxide.
