What is a phenotype?
Posted October 2, 2024

Answer

A phenotype refers to the physical and observable traits of an organism. These traits result from the interaction of its genotype (genetic makeup) with the environment. The phenotype encompasses various aspects such as shape, size, color, and behavior.

Although an organism’s phenotype is primarily influenced by its genetic makeup, phenotypic variations can occur due to both genetic expression and environmental factors, with traits often influenced by a combination of both. Phenotypic variation plays a crucial role in natural selection, where certain traits may provide a survival advantage based on environmental conditions. This variation can even occur among individuals with identical genotypes, such as twins, if exposed to different environments.
