What is the mechanism of absorption in plants?

Posted January 4, 2024

Answer

The mechanism of absorption involves active absorption and passive absorption. Active absorption refers to the process in which plants uptake ions or nutrients against their concentration gradients. This movement occurs from a region of lower concentration to a region of higher concentration, involving the use of ATP. Active absorption primarily occurs in the roots of plants and involves transport proteins of root cells. The symplast route is one of the pathways which this absorption occurs in. Passive absorption is the absorption regulated by transportation without the activity of root hair. Osmosis is a major process in passive absorption. Water moves from a region of higher concentration to an area  of lower concentration through the root’s cell membranes. This movement does not require any energy like active absorption does.
