What is the mechanism of endocrine signaling?

The process of endocrine signaling involves the release of hormones by unique endocrine cells that are then transported throughout the circulatory system to reach target cells at different parts of the body. Endocrine signaling is a tightly regulated process which keeps hormones and their effects at proper levels. Specifically, this is done through feedback loops in which there are positive and negative mechanisms. Negative feedback is the most common mechanism during endocrine signaling as it works to maintain a target level. For example, the pancreas uses negative feedback to regulate blood glucose levels. Positive feedback is when the secretion of a hormone causes it to amplify its effect. Another example is during labor,oxytocin is secreted from the pituitary gland. Oxytocin induces muscle contractions which help to push the baby through the birth canal.
