What is the structure of mitochondria?

Posted February 9, 2024

Answer

Mitochondria possess a rod-shaped, double-membrane structure composed of outer and inner mitochondrial membranes with a gap known as the intermembrane space. The inner membrane exhibits multiple folds called cristae, which extend into the interior. The outer membrane, which envelops the mitochondrion's surface, is abundant in special proteins called porins. The matrix of the mitochondria contains both the mitochondrial genetic system and the enzymes that play a crucial role in the processes of oxidative metabolism. Lastly, mitochondria typically measure between 0.5 to 10 micrometers in diameter.
