What's the significance of superoxide dismutase (SOD)?

Posted June 30, 2023

Answer

Superoxide dismutase is a crucial antioxidant defense against oxidative stress in the body. The enzyme functions in a tightly regulated process in order to maintain the balance between ROS generation and their elimination. SOD is responsible for the conversion of superoxide radicals to less harmful species like hydrogen peroxide molecular oxygen. By converting superoxide radicals into less harmful molecules, SOD is able to prevent the accumulation of these radicals and reduce oxidative damage in cells. Without this enzyme, there would be impaired cellular function and immune response in the body.
