Answer

Yes, 3D cell models are more physiologically relevant than 2D cell cultures.

A 2D cell culture exists in only two dimensions, which does not accurately represent how cells grow and proliferate in vivo or how they are affected by disease and injury. This makes it difficult to predict in vivo results of different drug treatments.

By contrast, 3D cell models exist in three dimensions and show a higher degree of structural complexity, which more accurately replicates intrinsic physiological conditions in vivo. 3D cell models also retain homeostasis for a longer period of time. All of these factors enable researchers to better predict in vivo responses to drug treatments.
