Is methylene blue toxic?

Answer

Methylene blue is safe only when used in therapeutic doses of less than 2mg per kg. It can cause toxicity when used in higher doses. Adverse effects of high doses of methylene blue may include coronary vasoconstriction, cardiac arrhythmias, increased pulmonary vascular pressure and decreased cardiac output, mesenteric blood flow and renal blood flow among others.
