What are enzymes composed of?

Posted November 6, 2020

Enzymes are proteins, and like all proteins they are composed of amino acids, which are linked together by peptide bonds to form long polypeptide chains (approximately 50 to 2000 amino acids long). Through hydrophobic interactions, intramolecular bonding, and van der Waals forces polypeptide chains will fold into defined three-dimensional shapes. The final conformation adopted by a newly synthesized protein will ultimately determine its functionality.
