What are the advantages of silver staining?

Posted August 17, 2021

Answer

Silver staining offers the following advantages:

  • It is a quick, easy-to-use, and highly sensitive technique for identifying proteins separated on gels.
  • It is 100 times more sensitive than other stains and can be used to detect as little as 0.01 nanogram of protein per square millimeter.
  • It can be used efficiently for the detection of proteins, DNA, and RNA without interfering with the structure of the polymers.
  • Its permanence and simplicity of spot cutting make it the preferred option over other fluorescent probes.
  • The end stain remains stable for several weeks before losing its effectiveness for observation.

Silver staining is the preferred option for the detection of minor contaminants in purified proteins or lower concentrations of proteins
