In late-stage apoptosis, the genetic material of the cell begins to degrade. DNA fragmentation allows for fluorescence label insertion into the damaged portions, or 'nicks'. These 'nicks' are detectable via terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase (TdT)-mediated dUTP nick end labeling, commonly abbreviated as a 'TUNEL' assay.
