What is required to hydrolyze ADP?

Posted August 3, 2021

Answer

Water is required to hydrolyze ADP (adenosine diphosphate). The addition of water breaks the bonds of adenosine diphosphate, releasing a phosphate group and converting ADP to AMP (adenosine monophosphate). Energy is released during the process.

ADP is hydrolyzed to AMP in the reaction ADP+H2O →AMP+Pi+free energy

Like most chemical reactions the hydrolysis of ADP to AMP is reversible.
