What kind of matrices are used for 3D cell cultures?

Answer

There are several different types of matrices used for 3D cell cultures. The choice of appropriate matrix depends primarily on the type of cell being used and specific experimental parameters.

The two most widely used matrices for 3D cell cultures include Hydrogels and Inert Matrices.

Hydrogels are polymeric materials that may be derived from animals or plants or they may be synthesized from chemicals. They contain a network of crosslinked polymer chains that are capable of absorbing and retaining water.

Inert Matrices are sponge-like membranes made of polystyrene. These matrices contain pores through which cells can proliferate and grow.
