What’s the difference between organ cultures and cell cultures?

Posted December 21, 2021

Answer

Organ cultures involve the culture of isolated organs grown in vitro under precise laboratory conditions. There are different types of organ cultures. They are differentiated based on the organ used for the culture, for example, root culture, anther culture, and shoot-tip culture.

Cell cultures involve growing and maintaining cells of multicellular organisms in vitro under precise laboratory conditions. The cells, which may have either plant or animal origin, are isolated by mechanical or enzymatic techniques. There are two main types of cell cultures – primary and secondary. They are differentiated based on the origin of the culture. In primary cell cultures, the cells are obtained directly from the organism and proliferated.  In secondary cell cultures, the cells are obtained from a primary cell culture.
