Can antioxidants help reduce the harmful effects of reactive oxygen species?

Posted June 30, 2023

Answer

Yes, antioxidants may help reduce the harmful effects of ROS. The body naturally produces antioxidants to counteract the effect of excessive free radicals. In healthy organisms, maintaining a fragile balance between oxidants and antioxidants is necessary for protection against the harmful effects of ROS. The continuous production of free radicals in organisms must be equalized by a similar rate of antioxidant consumption. Enzymatic or non-enzymatic antioxidants prevent the formation of free radicals and function to either repair or eradicate the damage caused by them. It is important to note that antioxidant supplements can act as pro-oxidants or OS inducers if ingested at high levels that surpass the recommended dietary intake.
