Is gel electrophoresis a type of chromatography?

Posted August 23, 2023

Answer

Yes, gel electrophoresis is considered a type of chromatography as it utilizes the same type of principles that chromatographies have to separate molecules. They are both forms of molecular sieving. A particular sample is used to elute the component in both methods. The procedure of electrophoresis involves charged molecules being separated according to size when placed in an electric field. The correct determination of the size of the RNA sample is as essential as deduction of the molecular weight of any other molecules that undergo electrophoresis.
