What are the advantages of monoclonal antibodies?

Posted October 10, 2023

Answer

There are various advantages of monoclonal antibodies.

  1. They function as immortal sources of monoclonal antibodies. For example, the fusion between an antibody-producing B cell and a myeloma cell will generate an immortal cell population that will continue to form the specific antibody which the original B cell produced.
  2. These antibodies provide high specificity, as they are produced to bind to specific target molecules and be used to detect specific cells in flow cytometry.
  3. Experiments with these antibodies provide high scalability and are highly reproducible.
  4. The wide selection available helps to identify the right clones to be used against the specific antigen.
  5. Since monoclonal antibodies are specific in the way they attack cancer cells, they are less toxic. There are fewer normal cells being affected by this type of therapy, which results in less side effects.
