What are the applications of Illumina sequencing technology?

Posted February 9, 2024

Answer

Illumina sequencing technology has various applications. One application is its ability to sequence an entire genome (entire-genome sequencing). Additionally, it can be used to study epigenetic factors, including genome-wide DNA methylation processes, and DNA-protein interactions. Illumina RNA-Seq allows researchers to quantify and analyze gene expression levels across the transcriptome. It can be used for studying alternative splicing and non-coding RNA. It is also capable of thoroughly sequencing specific exome and target regions, which is crucial for studying particular genes. Illumina also is involved in genomic and metagenomic sequencing. Large datasets are analyzed to identify genetic variants associated with specific traits or diseases. Illumina ChIP-Seq is used to analyze protein-DNA interactions, enabling the identification of binding sites for transcription factors. Illumina sequencing also allows for novel insights into the molecular processes of autoimmune and rheumatic diseases, psychiatric conditions, atherosclerosis and neurological disorders.
