Ultrafiltration relies isolates exosomes based on their size.
Cons of ultrafiltration exosome isolation techniques:
Recovery of exosomes present in the sample is limited by the membrane’s pore size. Exosomes that are below the filter’s cutoff may be lost, resulting in comparatively lower yield of isolated exosomes.
Other components in the sample that have similar sizes to exosomes can also pass through the filter. Additional purification steps may be required to remove these contaminants and obtain a purer exosome sample.
Exosomes of similar sizes cannot be effectively separated, resulting in reduced specificity.
