What are the differences between autolysis and apoptosis?

Posted April 13, 2023

Answer

Basis of differentiation

Autolysis

Apoptosis

Definition

Autolysis is the destruction of an organism’s cells by enzymes created by the cells themselves (especially those released by lysosomes

A programmed form of cell death in which cells undergo an ordered sequence of events which causes its death

Occurrence

Autolysis does not occur in healthy tissues

Apoptosis occurs in healthy tissue frequently

Intentionality

Autolysis is unintentional

Apoptosis is intentional

Effect

Results in harmful effects on surrounding tissues or cells

Does not produce harmful substances that interfere with (when undergoing the process properly)

Regulation

Is not a regulated process

Is a controlled process

Mechanism

Occurs because of lysosomal enzymes

Cells undergo changes like cellular blebbing, nuclear fragmentation, cell shrinkage, chromatin condensation, chromosomal DNA fragmentation, and mRNA decay

Type of organism exists in

Occurs in both multicellular and unicellular organisms

Occurs in multicellular organisms
