What are the differences between ectosomes and exosomes?

Posted July 21, 2023

Answer

Ectosomes and exosomes are both types of small vesicles that are released by cells. Both types of vesicles carry molecular cargo and both participate in intercellular communication. The key differences between ectosomes and exosomes lies in their origin and size. Ectosomes are larger vesicles that directly bud from the cell membrane. They range in size from 100 – 1000 nanometers. Exosomes are smaller vesicles that are formed inside the cell and released into the extracellular space. They are typically smaller, ranging in size from 30 to 150 nanometers.
