What are the differences between lipophilic and hydrophilic?
Posted March 17, 2023

Answer

The terms lipophilic and hydrophilic describe the solubility of a compound. There are several differences between these two terms.

Lipophilic

  • Refers to the ability of a substance to dissolve in lipids or fats
  • Soluble only in lipophilic solvents such as lipid, oil, fat and nonpolar solvents such as hexane, etc.
  • Chemical composition is mostly organic, nonpolar portions of molecules
  • Examples include fat-soluble vitamins, amino acids, hormones, and hydrocarbon compounds among others

Hydrophilic

  • Refers to the ability of a substance to dissolve in water or other hydrophilic solvents
  • Soluble only in hydrophilic solvents such as water
  • Contains polar functional groups
  • Examples include sugars, salts, alcohols, and soap
