What are the differences between strong and weak acids?

Posted October 10, 2023

Answer

Basis of differentiation

Strong acid

Weak acid

Definition

Strong acids are molecules which completely dissociate into their ions in aqueous solutions

Weak acids are molecules which partially dissociate into ions in aqueous solutions

pH

The pH of a strong acid solution is very low (around 0-1)

The pH of a weak acid is typically 3-5

Release of H+ ions

Strong acids release all the H+ ions into the solution

Weak acids do not release all H+ ions

Acid dissociation

The acid dissociation constant is a higher value

The acid dissociation constant is a comparatively lower value

Correlation with pKa value

The stronger the acid, the lower the pKa value is

The weaker an acid, the higher its pKa value

Acid type

Strong acids are polyprotic (capable of losing more than a single proton)

Weak acids are monoprotic (are capable of donating only one proton)
