What are the functions of Merkel cells?

Posted September 5, 2023

Answer

The function of these cells is to mediate mechanotransduction in the skin, though not all functions of Merkel cells are completely understood. Merkel cells may play a role in touch perception and have disklike features spatially correlated with hair follicles that contain arrays of Merkel cells and a dermal nerve. Merkel cells also produce specific proteins, like chromogranin A, and neurosecretory substances such as neuropeptides. Some of these substances function to work as neurotransmitters, while others promote growth and differentiation of cutaneous cell types. Thus, these cells are sometimes called neuroendocrine cells. It is also thought that Merkel cells may have endocrine and paracrine functions because some Merkel cells are not associated with a nerve.
