What are the functions of the cell envelope?

Posted March 2, 2023

Answer

Bacteria have a complex multilayered envelope that performs several important functions.

  • Provides cell stability and stiffness, helping the cell to maintain its shape and structural rigidity
  • Prevents the cell from bursting or collapsing
  • Protects the cell from its environment
  • Regulates the transport of substances in and out of the cell
  • Forms flagella in some bacteria, which are filamentous extensions that help motility
