The major components of ATP synthase are F1 and F0 sectors or portions. 

1. The F0 portionessentially acts as a rotor, permitting protons to flow through the membrane from an area of high concentration to low concentration. 
2. The F1 portionuses the energy produced by the proton flow through the F0 portion to catalyze the synthesis of ATP from ADP and Pi.
