What are the properties of genetic code?

Posted April 12, 2024

Answer

The properties of genetic code include:

  • Triplet code: sequence of 3 nucleotides
  • It is non-ambiguous: a specific codon will only code for a particular amino acid
  • It is universal: code is valid for all organisms
  • Degenerate code: some codons can code for the same amino acid
  • Non-overlapping code
  • Commaless
  • Have start and stop codons
  • Polarity: each triplet is read from 5’ to 3’
