- Triplet code: sequence of 3 nucleotides
- It is non-ambiguous: a specific codon will only code for a particular amino acid
- It is universal: code is valid for all organisms
- Degenerate code: some codons can code for the same amino acid
- Non-overlapping code
- Commaless
- Have start and stop codons
- Polarity: each triplet is read from 5’ to 3’
