What are the risks of using CRISPR in humans?

Posted March 14, 2024

Answer

There are also risks to consider of using CRISPR in humans. CRISPR may accidentally introduce genetic changes at unintended locations in the genome, potentially leading to harmful mutations or increasing the risk of malignancies. For example, several studies indicate that CRISPR might impair cells' ability to fight cancer and could induce more extensive genetic damage than previously recognized. The long-term safety of CRISPR-based therapies is not yet fully known and there are risks of immune responses as well as other unintended side effects.
