What causes T cells to become exhausted?

T cell exhaustion is a term used to describe loss of functionality in T cells as a result of overstimulation. Exhausted T cells have not given up the fight against pathogens. They just exhibit weakened effector abilities and change tactics to defend the body in a different way.
