What conditions affect epithelial tissue?

Posted August 5, 2022

Answer

There are several conditions that affect epithelial tissue. These range from mild and cosmetic to life-threatening.

Among the most serious conditions is the proliferation of malignant cells, resulting in cancer development. Adenocarcinoma and papillary thyroid carcinoma, are two types of cancers associated with epithelial tissue. Adenocarcinoma is responsible for most breast, pancreatic, prostrate, and colorectal cancers. Papillary thyroid carcinoma is responsible for most thyroid cancers.

Asthma is another condition associated with epithelial tissue. It is caused when the cells in the bronchial epithelium swell, narrowing the airways.

Celiac disease is caused when gluten triggers the immune system to attack and damage the microvilli of epithelial cells lining the intestine, hindering the intestine’s ability to absorb nutrients.

One of the causes of vertigo is the abnormal accumulation of stratified squamous epithelial cells deep inside the aural canal, resulting in problems with balance as well as hearing.

Warts on the outer layer of skin are caused by the action of some types of HPV virus on the squamous epithelial cells of the epidermis.
