What is a buffer?

Posted December 22, 2023

Answer

A buffer is an aqueous solution that resists pH change upon adding a basic or acidic component. It inactivates small amounts of added base or acid, and thus helps keep pH of the solution stable. This is important particularly for experiments that require specific and stable pH ranges. Buffers have a pH range and capacity, and thus the amount of acid/base can be neutralized before pH change, and the amount of change is known.
