What is an ionic compound?

Posted February 14, 2024

Answer

Ionic compounds are formed when ions with opposite charges, typically from a metal and a nonmetal, are attracted to each other, creating an ionic bond. In ionic compounds, electrons are transferred from the metal to the nonmetal, resulting in the formation of charged ions. Some examples of common ionic compounds include: potassium chloride (KCl), sodium chloride (NaCl), sodium fluoride (NaF), and calcium carbonate (CaCO3).
