What is the function of precursor skeletal muscle cells?

Posted October 16, 2023

Answer

The main function of skeletal myoblasts is regeneration of functional skeletal muscle following an injury. Under normal circumstances, these precursor cells lie dormant in healthy skeletal tissue. In case of an injury, when new tissue is required, skeletal myoblasts multiply and differentiate into mature skeletal muscle cells that replace the injured cells.  A few satellite cells are set aside and return to their earlier quiescent state for use in future regenerative demands.
