What is the importance of DNA proofreading process in DNA replication?

Posted March 26, 2024

Answer

DNA replication must accurately copy the genetic information from the parent DNA molecule to the newly synthesized daughter strands. Proofreading helps to correct errors that occur during DNA synthesis, such as mismatched base pairs or insertion or deletion errors. Proofreading significantly improves the accuracy of DNA synthesis. Thus, the accuracy provided by proofreading reduces the risk of mutations that could lead to disease.
