What is the significance of energy coupling?

Posted May 30, 2023

Answer

Energy coupling is crucial for balancing the 2 types of metabolism in cells: anabolism and catabolism. Anabolic reactions require energy (endergonic) in order to occur. For anabolic reactions to continually occur in a biological system, they must be coupled with a catabolic reaction. Catabolic reactions are exergonic and release energy. Energy coupling also plays a role in the synthesis of ATP, as ATP is created by the transfer of energy released from exergonic reactions to drive the endergonic reaction that produces ATP. Energy coupling also helps in homeostasis by providing energy for the process of removing waste products and repairing cellular damage.
