What makes up the complement system?

Posted November 7, 2023

Answer

The complement system is made up of soluble proteins and glycoproteins called complements. These proteins are produced by the liver and found in the blood. There are more than 20 types of complements present in the serum.

The complements circulate in the bloodstream normally as inactive precursors and are activated only during inflammatory reactions, when they act collectively to destroy the pathogen.
