• Be able to differentiate into specific cell type(s)
• Exhibit extensive proliferation to produce sufficient quantities of cells required for replacing damaged or lost tissues 
• Integrate successfully into the surrounding tissue after transplant 
• Survive in the recipient’s body post-transplantation
• Maintain appropriate functionality throughout the recipient’s life
• Avoid rejection by the recipient’s immune system
